In early 2012, Miami-Dade Extension's Urban Horticulture Agent Henrique Mayer planted a demonstration plot of low-maintenance, drought-tolerant shrubs behind the Extension building. When it came time to set up the plot's irrigation of course he consulted the Urban Conservation Unit! Irrigation dynamos and multi-media fiends that we are, we not only put in the drip irrigation system, but we filmed it, too! Thus was born "Going Florida-Friendly," a short video touting the teaching potential of the demo plot and the wonders of drip irrigation. Almost 9 months later we revisit the demonstration plot to answer a few questions, namely: What's the state of the plants? Did they survive the drought season? When were they last properly watered? And does Jesus Lomeli really take his breaks lounging between towering rows of shrubs? Watch the video and find out! And if you live in South Florida, stop by the Homestead office and take a gander for yourself!
