![Tropical Cyclone Freddy Breaks Records before Lashing Madagascar
Around 7:20 p.m. local time on February 21, 2023, Tropical Cyclone Freddy made landfall on the eastern coast of Madagascar 18 miles north of the town of Mananjary. It was the first land the storm encountered after traveling more than 4,000 miles across the Indian Ocean since forming on February 5 near Indonesia. So far, the destructive storm has not only battered the island with a dangerous storm surge, torrential rains, and destructive winds, but it has also killed five people. Prior to reaching Madagascar, the storm also caused some flooding and minor damage on the islands of Mauritius and La Reunion as it passed to the north.

![NOAA Satellites Monitor Massive Winter Storm
From its origins over the Pacific Ocean on Jan. 21, and throughout its impacts on the central and eastern United States from Jan 24–26, 2026, NOAA satellites closely monitored a massive winter storm that swept across the United States, and brought heavy snow, ice, and dangerous cold.

![Happy Earth Day 2023
The first Earth Day took place in 1970, which also was the same year NOAA was established. Since then, NOAA satellites have been monitoring Earth’s weather, environment, oceans, and climate. They provide critical information for forecasts and warnings of severe weather and environmental hazards.
This Earth Day, we have a lot to celebrate. Over the past year, NOAA has added two new satellites to its Earth-observing fleet and contributed an instrument to a mission that will help us have a better understanding of Earth’s physical and biological environment.

![Earth from Orbit: NOAA Debuts First Imagery from GOES-18
On May 11, 2022, NOAA shared the first images of the Western Hemisphere from its GOES-18 satellite. The satellite’s Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument captured these images on May 5.
GOES-18, NOAA’s newest geostationary satellite, launched on March 1. The ABI views Earth with sixteen different channels, each measuring energy at different wavelengths along the electromagnetic spectrum to obtain information about Earth’s atmosphere, land, and ocean.

![Wildfires Rage in Western Canada
Although wildfire season in Canada usually begins in early May, when the snow begins to melt and uncover dead vegetation that can become fuel for fires, more than 100 wildland fires have already begun raging across western Canada this month. Roughly a million acres have burned, and more than 29,000 people in Alberta and British Columbia were forced to evacuate their homes.
According to local experts, this type of “ferocious” wildfire activity isn’t typical this early in the year, and firefighters don’t normally see such a large area burned at once. Additionally, a news release issued by the government of Alberta stated the region is experiencing unusually hot, dry conditions this spring, which makes it an ideal environment for fires to spread. A provincial state of emergency in Alberta was declared on May 6, 2023.
