Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) is one of the most surreal and daring entries in the Godzilla franchise. Directed by Yoshimitsu Banno, this film blends eco-horror with psychedelic visuals to deliver a cautionary tale about pollution. As Godzilla faces off against Hedorah, a shapeshifting sludge monster born from humanity’s waste, the film critiques environmental destruction with a mix of camp and grim satire. Though controversial upon release, Banno's unique vision left an indelible mark on the series and continues to influence modern Godzilla films.
