Erik Aadahl wanted to create a distinct and exceptional roar for the new Godzilla. They tried using a leather glove on a contrabass to make the sound, but it wasn't suitable for six audio channels. Nevertheless, they continued experimenting and found that rubbing a sheet of metal against a large tube filled with dry ice made a bellowing and shrieking sound that worked. To perfect the roar, they added the sound of a potted plant dragged across the concrete, slowed down. For the monster's atomic breath, the team used Delta IV rocket launch recordings, and the build-up of the breath was created by modifying an elephant trumpet. The result was a genuinely unique and impressive sound that perfectly embodied the legendary monster.
