Written in 1817 by N. F. S. Grundtvig, God's Word Is Our Great Heritage was originally written as a fifth verse for Martin Luther's Ein feste Burg (A Mighty Fortress is Our God.) In 1916, Friedrich Otto Reuter, a professor at Martin Luther College, paired the hymn with a melody he composed which is how most of us know it today.

God's Word is our great heritage
And shall be ours forever;
To spread its light from age to age
Shall be our chief endeavor.
Through life it guides our way;
In death it is our stay.
Lord, grant, while worlds endure,
We keep its teachings pureThroughout all generations.
