God told Gideon his army was too big.
He had 32,000 men ready to fight, but God cut that number down to 300. The enemy was massive. The Bible says they were like a swarm of locusts, and their camels could not even be counted. But God still sent Gideon. And that is what makes this story so powerful.
Gideon did not see himself as a hero. He was hiding in a winepress, trying to thresh wheat where the enemy would not find him. When God called him a mighty warrior, Gideon basically said, “You have the wrong man.” His family was weak. He felt small. He felt unqualified. But God kept leading him one step at a time.
Gideon tore down the altar of Baal, even though he was afraid. He asked God for signs, and God was patient with him. Then God reduced his army again and again until there were only 300 men left. No swords. No battle plan that made sense. Just trumpets, torches, and clay jars.
