Oh man this is a big one for me. Possibly one of my most complex and challenging midis I've ever composed. This whole thing was trying to look for new avenues to explore in the composition and challenge my old ways of thinking.

Going in, I knew the map was going to be a big one, and so I knew the midi needed to be fitting. To me, long maps need midis that take their time, tend to stay downbeat, and don't outstay their welcome. A short midi can work if it's simple and not too energetic, but longer midis probably need some variety. This one doesn't follow any sort of structure that repeats (ie verse chorus verse chorus), but it does feature multiple transitions and time signature changes to keep things fresh.

I started with a very ominous sort of cacophony, more atmospheric than melodic, a slow opening that I think sounds like a sinister "unfolding" to match the dramatic opening of the map. It eventually blends into a polyrhythmic melody that ushers in a chorus of pad sounds, almost like the song is taking a deep breath before it truly begins. This whole passage was kind of an off the cuff thing, just feeling my way through it as I went along, with not much of a plan.

Once it transitions into the more traditionally melodic part, I started looking for instruments I don't use again (vibraphone was a nice dark horse this time). This passage I intentionally play out for a bit without too much change in dynamics or complicated lead instruments, so that it nicely builds into the transitionary part where the drums, bassline, and clav start to open up in complexity and energy. But this build is a bit short lived, as the song settles back into a longer, more somber part. I didn't want the song to really resolve, and instead feel a bit apprehensive.

The part at the end with the "jittery" synths was interesting to compose. I like a lot of electronic music, especially if it's spacey and lush sounding, and I love synths and pads with a lot of reverb and delay and texture. I achieved this by using the "Expression" channel control and randomly dropping it to zero and then back up to 100 to give it that choppy sound.

Ultimately, I've listened to this song like a thousand times between composing it and working on the map. At times, I'm not sure if I achieved my goal or not of making a midi that doesn't get old with the length of the map (could be up to 2 hours for players that take their time or struggle on the larger fights). It is fairly complex and I dunno, maybe certain parts get old after a while? I certainly think it's one of the compositions I'm most proud of, so if nothing else, I know I succeeded there.
