God gave us free will because he doesn't want us to be robots: someone that is being told what to do and that just follows orders... or does He?
Telling you that you have free will but then attaching to that the threat of eternal punishment if you don't follow the rules and orders given to you by your god or his representatives is not free will. They say "you can choose to love god or to reject him...but if you reject him he is going to punish you for eternity. So see!? He gives you free will!"
