CANTO 9: METRPOLIS
Describing his wanderings through the industrial wastelands of the millennium—from the bleak architecture of the City, to the environmental devastation precipitated by the Salesman and a Beast of screens arising from the Earth; from savage artists shitting on pedestals and hailed as modern Michelangelos, to the dismal infinity of Sprawl that rings the City—Joel finally brings his narration to the present. He explains that, no longer able to bear that madness, he has run away, escaping to a forest beyond the Sprawl. Done with his funeral oration, though, he accepts that he must, indeed, return—before one final horror changes his mind, and he hurls himself into the underworld—in search of God...
