Ladies and gentlemen, this is race car #5. The Mach 5 from “Speed Racer” has been described as the most famous race car in the world since it started in the 1960s as a cartoon series and still has a fan base today of about 50 million people. It's hard to believe it took almost 40 years before a real-life version was created. This prototype was created for Speed Racer Enterprise who had plans to turn it into a signature series of 100 Corvette-based, street legal, Mach 5’s, numbered and signed by Peter Fernandez (the voice actor and creative force behind the Speed Racer cartoons) to raise money and awareness for the Child Safety Network. The cars were sold for $250,000 each. Due to the lack of interest, only five were built (in addition to this prototype). Around 60 years after the cartoon was first created, they finally made a live-action film in 2008 and even though it was a live movie, the car was CGI, so this still remains one of the only tangible versions of a Mach 5 ever built. Speed Racer was created in Japan by Tatsuo Yoshida and was originally called “Mock Go Go Go.” They made about 50 episodes and then they canned it. A couple years later, Peter Fernandez took that concept and Americanized it. Only he, and three other people, did all of the voices of the entire show and tried to match the Japanese animation with the American scripts, which is why they talk so fast and often did not match up with the animation.
