A bird in the hand or two in the bush? Beginning Go players have to wrestle with the dilemma between choosing direct profit / territory, or thickness / influence that can be used to attack the opponent or perhaps look to a larger framework later in the game.

We illustrate these two different orientations by going over a game between myself as black, influence oriented, and myself as white, more territory oriented.
