The story of General Motors' lost Duramax V8, known as the LMK internally, has been one of the automotive world's greatest modern mysteries. Just before the Great Recession, GM threw everything it had at developing a world-beating diesel motor for its half-ton pickups. Featuring advanced tech that was far ahead of its time, like a hot vee turbo setup, a 29,000-psi common rail fuel system, a compacted graphite iron block, and unusual split-cap main bearings, the 4.5L LMK V8 was sized to drop directly into a Silverado's engine bay, or really anywhere a traditional small-block V8 would fit.
With all that, the LMK delivered 310 horsepower, 510 pound-feet of torque, and 25% better fuel economy than GM's gas V8s. GM knew it had a winner on its hands... but in 2009, right before it was supposed to launch, the company went bankrupt and was forced to kill the project. The LMK never saw the light of day.
Officially, all the prototypes were destroyed. But over the last decade, rumors persisted that at least one surviving engine had escaped the purge and made it into private hands. So a couple of years ago, we started work on tracking it down.
We followed the trail for months, hitting dead end after dead end, watching sources pop up with bits of evidence then disappear on us. We worked every connection we had to find the truth. And then, out of nowhere, we received an email from a stranger on the other side of the planet with three fateful words: "I got one."
