"Iphigenie en Tauride" is considered by many to be Gluck’s greatest work and the culmination of his career. In Claus Guth’s production, the main emphasis is on the psychological damage carried by the siblings Iphigénie and Oreste - the terrible blood legacy of the house of Atreus. They are shadowed by doubles with huge puppet-like heads that express their inner turmoil. Manifestations of their murderous and murdered parents, Agamemnon and Clyternnestra, also appear in this way. This powerful and visually arresting device provides a very clear understanding of the background and substance of the story. In his stage designs, Christian Schmidt has realized a nightmare, creating a bewitchingly beautiful prison of despair, with sumptuous red velvet walls and rich parquet flooring. Black for death, white for innocence, and red for blood are the colors that dominate. The costumes are bloodstained, with stab wounds near the heart, worn like badges. Due to the distressing content, viewers' discretion is advised.
