Global Warming Changes to the Pacific Oceans “Gulf Stream Equivalent” known as the Kuroshio Current
When we think about climate change impacts on global ocean circulation we generally consider:
- Slowing of the AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation), changes in the Gulf Stream, …
- More recently, we think of Antarctica Sea Ice loss, slowing of the SMOC (Southern Meridional Overturning Circulation), …
Let me add a new topic to think about, namely the Pacific Oceans “Gulf Stream” like ocean current known as the Kuroshio Current, you know, that powerful ocean current moving northward off the east coast of the Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan.
We’ll, over the last 30 years it appears to have moved closer to the coastline, riding atop the continental shelf , resulting in higher volume flow rates in the near-coastal regions and reduced volume flow rates on the seaward side of its extent.
Strange indeed…
