The Olympic Games have always been a site of soft diplomacy for participating nations. This has never been truer than in 2024, as athletes and countries competed at the Paris Olympic Games.

Olympic champions Patrick Johnson and Kieren Perkins joined award-winning sports reporter Tracey Holmes ahead of the 2024 Games to discuss the future of the Olympics and examine how the competition is shaped by the tensions of geopolitical affairs.

Together, they explored Australian representation at the Games and discussed international divisions and points of connection. They also looked ahead to a major event in Australia’s calendar: the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

In this edition of The Fifth Estate, philosopher Hanno Sauer unravels the evolutionary story explaining the major moral transformations of humanity over the past 500 years. Delving into topics such as punishment, social justice, moral standards, inequality and identity politics, he drew on elements of neuroscience, cognitive science, politics and social psychology to illuminate how we have arrived at the current moral zeitgeist. Sauer shows how our moral disagreements of the past can give us a clearer understanding of our fractured present, and hope for a better, more equitable future.
