I've been testing GLM 5.2 on Z.ai and it genuinely made me question why I'm paying $30 a month for Claude. This free AI model built a 62-page, 22,000-word literature review with 160 references: and it pulled the actual figures out of a paper to build a research seminar presentation. Here's exactly what happened when I put GLM 5.2 head-to-head with Claude Opus 4.8 on three real academic tasks.
GLM 5.2 is Z.ai's new upgrade built for long-horizon tasks, which in plain English means a huge context window and an improved architecture that puts it surprisingly close to Claude on the benchmarks. It's also open access, so you're not locked into a subscription to use it. I tested the chat mode for paper summaries, the agent mode for a full research-backed literature review, and the AI PPT mode for turning a paper into a presentation. One of those three results genuinely stunned me.
