Need remote access to a laptop, NAS, server, phone, tablet or even a game console without installing remote desktop software? The GL.iNet Comet Q and Comet X are two new KVM-over-IP devices that aim to make remote hardware-level control much easier.
In this video, I look at the GL.iNet Comet Q USB-C KVM and the Comet X 4-port KVM add-on currently available through Kickstarter. The Comet Q is designed for USB-C devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, Mac mini systems and compact PCs, while the Comet X can switch between up to 4 HDMI-connected devices from one remote KVM gateway.
The Comet Q supports USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet, remote browser access, Tailscale, ZeroTier, touchscreen control, Wake-on-LAN and hardware-level remote management. The Comet X is aimed more at homelabs, server rooms and multi-device setups, with 4 HDMI inputs, PoE support, rack-mounting and 4K 30FPS remote access.
The Kickstarter campaign also includes a discounted Comet X add-on option. This means that someone who wants a USB-C KVM for mobile devices, plus a 4-port KVM for servers, NAS systems, consoles or media hardware, can potentially get both at a lower launch price.
