As a result of this exciting five-day course, students can rent bench space in most hot shops around the country. In this class, Dave and his son Bryan introduce students to the wonderful world of hot glass and offhand glass blowing. First, the class learns about the history of the studio glass movement, proper tool use, and hot shop safety. In teams of two or three, the students begin working with molten glass. Students start by making paperweights, then progress to making glasses, vases, and bowls using solid forms. The third and fourth days are devoted to building on skills learned in previous sessions and completing new forms. As the work progresses, color will now be applied and observed in its reaction, along with the addition of “bits” to the blown shapes, such as handles and prunts. Dave also introduces freehand sculpting with molten glass. This final day is filled with exciting choices for students and plenty of opportunities for freeform experimentation. Caution: A high level of adrenaline is expected, and an addiction may develop.
Dave and Bryan Lee own Hot Shop Valpo in Valparaiso, Indiana. They have been creating works of art together for many years, including individual vessels, paperweights and marbles, cremation ash memorial art, and large architectural installations. Collections of their work can be found from California to Key West, Florida. Across the Midwest, their permanent architectural installations are located in hospitals, municipal buildings, and universities. The duo has been selected for the prestigious Indiana Artisans competition. They are both dynamic yet patient instructors. “Glass is an adrenaline charged medium. It is urgent in that once you start something you have to finish it. Glass has a mind of its own with many factors working against the artist, such as gravity and temperature, but that is what makes it so exciting.”
