The people of Edo symbolize courage.
Between 1854-55, Edo suffered a series of devastating earthquakes, known as the Ansei great earthquakes. In his series of prints, Utagawa Hiroshige captures the city as it was continuing to rebuild.
In this episode of Give Me a Minute, Takashi Murakami explores one of Hiroshige’s prints and the ways in which the composition and the woman featured represent the city emerging from darkness.
