Alexandra Croitoru’s photography reverses the status quo.
In her photographic series as part of In the Now: Gender and Nation in Europe, Selections from the Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl Photography Collection, she poses alongside a bodybuilder, hip-hop artists, and even the then-Prime Minister of Romania. In each double-portrait, as she refers to them, Croitoru asked her male counterparts to avert their gaze from the camera while she looks directly into the lens, intentionally inverting the expectations of gender and power sharing.
