[solved] Fonts (this may take a while) YA THINK?
Destroy this problem and kick the GIMP in the behind to make it run fast again. Lazy gimp, teach them a lesson! GIMP Startup repair of the font cache is easy to do once you know where to look:

C:\Users\[yourusernamehere]\AppData\Local\fontconfig

Linux:

$XDG_CACHE_HOME/fontconfig/*.cache-*

Which probably means

/usr/X11/var/cache/fontconfig/*.cache-*
or
.cache/fontconfig/*.cache-*
or
.config/fontconfig/*.cache-*

macOS (Mac OS X):

~/.fontconfig or
/usr/X11/var/cache/fontconfig/*.cache-*
or
.cache/fontconfig/*.cache-*
or
.config/fontconfig/*.cache-*
