Gil Scott-Heron (1949–2011) was an American poet, musician, and author whose work blended soul, jazz, and spoken word. He became best known in the 1970s and 1980s for performances that fused jazz, blues, and soul with lyrics addressing the social and political issues of the time.

Working closely with musician Brian Jackson, he delivered his material through both rhythmic spoken-word passages and expressive singing. Scott-Heron described himself as a “bluesologist”, which he defined as “a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues”. Albums such as Pieces of a Man and Winter in America helped shape and anticipate later African-American genres including hip hop and neo-soul.
Many regard him as one of the earliest and most influential figures in rap and MC culture. His recordings were widely acclaimed, particularly “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. AllMusic critic John Bush described him as “one of the most important progenitors of rap music”, noting that his direct, streetwise poetry inspired generations of thoughtful rappers, while his songwriting later brought him success in the R&B charts.
