Gigi Perez - Fable | Vevo DSCVR

For some indie fans, Gigi Perez first exploded into their hearts and minds in 2021 with “Sometimes (Backwood).” Others had a similar experience late last year and up to now with “Sailor Song.” Plenty of things bind the two ethereal ballads together: a far away acoustic guitar strummed as if by a ghost, Perez’ tactile low-end register, passionate-yet-contained lyricism, and the fact that both tracks first exploded on TikTok. Yet, Gigi herself has lived a lifetime in those three years. The West Palm Beach native was signed to a major label, broke up with said label, and got picked up by another, Island Records. She’s battled online trolls who expected her to change the lyrics of “Sailor Song,” while at the same time becoming a bastion for the LGBTQ+ community by famously saying that her art, no one’s art, in fact, “is a democracy.” Songwriting, which she’s been doing since she became "obsessed" with the craft at age 16, is first and foremost for herself. “2025 is looking to be an insane year,” she told us on the DSCVR set, where she performed her latest single, “Fable,” paired with a spacious arrangement of her massive hit, "Sailor Song.” This is a snapshot of an artist having a moment, but there’s certainly more victories to come. “My first album is coming out, and I’ve dreamed of my first album since I can remember,” she mused. Seems like the wind is in her sails.
