Did you know there’s a giant sequoia tree growing in Michigan? In this video, I visit the Lake Bluff Bird Sanctuary in Manistee, home to the Michigan Champion Sequoia — the largest sequoia east of the Rockies!
Lake Bluff isn’t just about trees. This estate once belonged to Edie Gray, stepson of Joy Morton (founder of Morton Salt) and grandson of J. Sterling Morton (founder of Arbor Day). The Gray family planted six California sequoia seedlings here in 1949, and three survived. Today, the tallest soars 116 feet high, drawing thousands of visitors every year.
Join me as I explore the sanctuary’s history, the surprising connection to Morton Salt, and why sequoias are considered climate champions for their ability to store carbon. I’ll also share how this little piece of Michigan connects to my recent trip to Sequoia National Park in California.
