Tight seeding windows and wet spring conditions routinely test broad-acre producers across the Canadian Prairies, making field efficiency and tendering speed critical to getting a crop in the ground. To cover more acres with fewer stops, equipment manufacturers are expanding cart capacities and redesigning handling systems to keep drills moving during narrow planting windows.

At Ag in Motion in Langham, Sask., RealAgriculture’s Amber Bell caught up with Ben Zelle, product manager for planting and air seeding equipment with John Deere, to discuss the public debut of the C1450T air cart. Carrying 1,460 bushels, the unit stands as the largest addition to the C-Series lineup.

This new machine features a 5-tank system, which is a first for John Deere. This allows for faster fill-ups, less time tendering, and more time seeding. Besides the tank system is also includes a larger 16-inch conveyer auger system with a stainless steel hopper.

“One of the features I'm most excited about are the tires,” says Zelle. “Those low sidewall tires at 12 PSI really help take all of the weight that we have on a C1100T and spread it out so that I'm not getting that compaction or rutting that I would get in the field. And I'm able to spread it out in a way that it acts very similar to our C850 cart in terms of ground contact and spreading out that weight.”

Besides the high floatation duals on the front and rear, it has an Easy Lift System that takes bulk bags and lifts them up to tanks 1, 2, or 3 to have additional flexibility within the field and tendering logistics. The size of the tanks has changed as well. Instead of a 50-bushel flex tank, it is now is 105.

"Changing from a 50-bushel tank on our 850 to this 105-bushel flex tank gives more flexibility as we look at our configurations and how we would utilize this cart as we aren't just planting canola, but as we go into our pulse grains and other crops throughout the planting season," says Zelle.
