Take a look back inside Light & Shadow: A Movement in Stills, a Willis Bell photographic exhibition presented in Accra, Ghana.

Through Bell’s remarkable archive, the exhibition offered a rare visual record of Ghana in the years following independence—a country building, changing, and defining itself in real time.

In this video, we go beyond the photographs to explore the Ghana of Kwame Nkrumah, the optimism and ambition of the post-independence era, the development of projects such as Akosombo, and Ghana’s growing importance as a meeting point for Africa and the Black diaspora.

We also reflect on Maya Angelou’s years in Ghana and what it meant for African Americans to experience a Black-led African nation during such an important period in modern Black history.

This was more than a photo exhibition.

It was a window into our story.
