Commentary:
Minnie: When I heard of the theme "Time Machine", I thought we were in trouble because the rules weren't clear on what that meant exactly. What if we were to pick a song that wasn't suitable for this theme at all? All my concerns were laid to rest when I was informed that we were allowed to be creative with our interpretation of this theme. This was when the choice of "Tegami ~Haikei Juugo no Kimi e~" by Angela Aki became obvious to me.
Even though most of our viewers/supporters have probably never heard of this masterpiece, the majority of the Japanese population has heard of this song at one point or another. How could they not? This song is actually the graduation song for many high schools over in Japan. It is as loved over there as "I believe I can fly" and "Graduation" are for us Americans. Not only that, people around the world are captured by the heart and soul of this song, including the members of GGG. With a strong message to youth everywhere and of all skin color, this song not only transcends time by walking alongside Japanese high school graduates, but the oceans of the world as well.
For our second reasoning behind why this song is perfect for the theme, it's the letter. The letter, to put it simply, is a metaphor for a time machine. The lyrics speak of a student who feels down, only to receive a reply to his or her letter from an older correspondent with a warm message. It's as if the adult self is time traveling and responding this distress call through the use of a single letter.
In the end, I must admit, there are even times when members of GGG want to write a letter to their future selves for reassurance that their future are brighter than the current, "bittersweet" present. As I typed this, I am emotional and tearful because not only can we sing for those who are having a hard time with their lives, we are able to pay tribute to a songwriter who has touched the hearts of so many. We may not be able to live up to her, but we feel blessed enough to be able to spread her message. Thank you, Angela Aki, and every one of you.
