Building future-proof, hardware-agnostic, embedded applications can be a challenge. This is even more true when looking at IoT scenarios, where many things are meant to run in unison: sensor data acquisition and processing, communication with a server, graphical user interface, etc. Soon enough, the limitations of single-threaded applications become apparent. Luckily, real-time operating systems (RTOS) are here to help! The Zephyr Project is one such RTOS, and it provides an open-source solution targeting various hardware architectures including Cortex-M (like SAMD21, Arduino Uno Minima, STM32), Tensilica Xtensa (such as ESP32), and RISC-V. Designed for devices with limited resources, Zephyr is also developed with a strong focus on security.
During this webinar with Benjamin Cabe (Developer Advocate for the Zephyr Project), we will provide an introductory overview of Zephyr, and dive into a practical example of how to design and write an embedded application that harnesses RTOS principles. To add to the fun, the application will be leveraging TinyML to turn a "dumb" gas sensor into a smart, IoT-ready, artificial nose!
