You can still get soft shadows if you put diffusion gels or a sock directly on a reflector for video and photography. You don't always need a softbox for soft shadows when doing camera work. If you do a lot of outdoor video and photography, like wedding photography or sports photography or outdoor portraits, then consider using large reflectors, they can withstand wind and breezes better than a softbox. Using pro lighting diffusion gels from Rosco or Lee filters can help create soft shadows without losing as much light as normal softbox fabric or silks.
