Part 2: Healthy Aging: Is Diet & Exercise The Secret To Longevity?

Each new generation is living longer than ever before and thus faced with a unique set of challenges in the process of getting older.

Dr. Lisa Lilienfield will discuss these challenges and the key factors essential for healthy aging in the Kaplan Center's "Total Recovery Lecture Series." With an emphasis on inflammation as a risk factor, she will introduce centenarians from various cultures and show how lifestyle, diet and exercise has affected their longevity.

Dr. Lilienfield will also discuss, 1) The neurophysiology and neuroplasticity of the brain and how we can change from negative to positive thinking through the practice of meditation and gratitude, 2) The Grant Study, a 75 year old Harvard study that determined factors in healthy aging and determined that those who resist change fare worse than those who have a positive outlook on societal change, and 3) The current and future use of genomics and stem cells for the treatment and prevention of chronic disease, and their role in healthy aging.

The Kaplan Center = A More Effective Model of Care.
In 1985, Dr. Kaplan created the Kaplan Clinic in Arlington, Virginia, to offer patients suffering from chronic pain and illness a more effective model of medical care. Incorporating the best elements of conventional and alternative medicine, his goal was — and continues to be — to provide an integrative approach that attends not only to a patient’s physical symptoms but also addresses the root causes of an individual’s pain and illness, including problems of the mind and spirit that may be contributing to the disease process.

Functional Medicine (FM) is a holistic, integrative approach to health and well-being that evaluates how each biological system is working and supporting the health of the whole, interconnected body.

About Dr. Lisa Lilienfield:

Lisa Lilienfield, MD, is board-certified in family medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Lilienfield also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine’s Department of Community and Family Medicine.
In Dr. Lisa’s words, “My goal is to help my patients get well by finding a balance in life — not just physically, but in mind, body and spirit. I look at each patient’s medical history, family history, medications, sleep problems, adrenal and other endocrine problems. We do a thorough workup and develop a treatment plan. Sometimes relatively simple changes can radically improve a patient’s health!”

Dr. Lilienfield’s approach to care comes from a Functional Medicine (FM) perspective, treating the “whole person,” not just her patient’s symptoms. Each new patient visit starts with a look back in time to find stressors or traumas that may be contributing to his or her health condition.

After a thorough physical examination, targeted blood work and other specialized tests to find hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, or other fundamental dysfunctions within the body will be ordered. Dr. Lilienfield then creates a unique treatment plan that aims to address those imbalances and lower inflammation so the body can begin healing.

Dr. Lilienfield was recognized by Fifty Plus Magazine as an “Exceptional Physician” for her holistic approach to medicine and has been included in Washingtonian Magazine’s listing as one of the “Best Doctors in the Washington, D.C. Area.”
