Here is a design method that helps you to get better design ideas. It's called the But Design Method!

This is a design tutorial on how to design anything.

This design method can be applied to designing a logo, a website, designing clothing, a poster, a character for your story, ...

Once you've finished watching this video, this creative method should allow you to get good design ideas in petty much all common design disciplines super quickly. Whether that's graphic design, concept art, game design, corporate design, story design or character design doesn't really matter. You'll be able to get ideas pretty much instantly.

Do you want to get ideas for your story, ideas for your game, ideas for your designs, ideas for your concepts? This is a design tutorial how to design all of that. I think this is an awesome brainstorming and ideation technique to come up with great concepts and design ideas.

You can get some creative ideas for games, stories, characters, logos, websites, cloths, landscapes, settings, locations and even sounds.

Try incorporating the But Design Method into your design process and see if it helps you to get some good design ideas.

I feel like this method is especially useful if you have a writers block, you're stuck or you have a very open design problem with a lot of different possible solutions.

Whether you do your designs on paper with a pencil or you do it digitally with Photoshop or Illustrator makes no difference. This design strategy can still be applied to your creative process and help you to get better design ideas.

If you're a concept artist and want to get more interesting ideas for your artworks, this is for you. If you're a writer or a designer, listen up as well!

Step 1: You start with something very basic and simple, with a stereotype or an archetype. It needs to be an established design that already exists and one a lot of people know.

Step 2: Add a "BUT" to the sentence!

Step 3: Let your imagination run wild! How could you finish the phrase?

Just do this for a while and pick the most interesting design idea you came up with! Feel free to combine multiple design ideas into one if you feel like that could improve your result! Is the idea still not interesting enough? No worries, there's a fix for that as well. Simply start picking smaller parts of the design now and repeat the same process to add more detail to your concept.

Your design should be different and stand out. You hear that all the time, because that's the only way to get noticed nowadays. At the same time it shouldn't be too different from what people know, or your audience will be confused and unable to identify with your design. The But Design Technique is an awesome fix for that, because it helps you to find a great middle ground between already established designs and innovation. The first part of the sentence is the established part of the design and everything after the word "BUT" is the innovation you add to the mix.

In short the But Design Method...
- helps you to find the correct mix between established designs and innovation.
- gets you into an awesome creative mindset.
- forces you to think outside of the box.

In this video we'll design a logo for a company, we'll design a character, an outfit, a location, a storyline, a video game and even a sound.

Let me know what your thoughts on this design method are. Did you get some good design ideas? How do you come up with designs? Did this design tutorial really tell you how to design anything or are there exceptions? Can you imagine implementing this into your design process to improve your designs?
