Karlsruhe Zoo is located north of Karlsruhe Central Station in the city of Karlsruhe. It was opened in 1865 and is one of the oldest zoos in Germany. It has about 800 animals and 150 different species. At 22 hectares, it is the biggest park within the city limits. To add to the pleasure of a visit, the grounds also contain cafes and kiosks for refreshments and a number of playgrounds. The Japanese garden which is located within the zoo is famous, too. It is a miniature landscape with a Shinto shrine, stone lions, a pagoda and many different flowers and trees. The Japanese Garden is a perfect place to take a break from the city and relax.
