During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, two teenage girls became some of the most feared resistance fighters in the country.
Freddie and Truus Oversteegen were just 14 and 16 years old when they joined the Dutch resistance. At first, they carried illegal newspapers, delivered messages, and helped smuggle refugees past German checkpoints. But as the occupation grew more brutal, their missions became far more dangerous.
They learned to sabotage railways, burn Nazi facilities, and eventually, eliminate targets.
Using their age as cover, they could move through checkpoints without suspicion. German soldiers saw them as harmless girls on bicycles. In reality, they were tracking movements, identifying collaborators, and setting up ambushes.
Sometimes, they followed targets through the streets and struck when they were alone. Other times, they used deception, gaining a soldier’s trust before leading him into the woods where resistance fighters were waiting.
They later teamed up with Hannie Schaft, known as “the girl with the red hair,” forming one of the most effective resistance groups in the Netherlands. Together, they carried out missions so dangerous that even the Nazis began actively hunting them.
