When I teach German, I teach Hochdeutsch. Standard German.
But German has a huge number of regional dialects, and depending on where you are, they can sound very different from what you learned. Even fluent speakers sometimes struggle outside their own region.
The good news? Most Germans recognize when you’re not local and will happily switch to standard German.
Dialects are part of the language. Not a reason to panic.
