Gerald Wunungmurra from Gapuwiyak community mucking around on the yidaki, they're fighting over who's going to play next hahaha. The guys are down in Melbourne for a national basketball tournament, Bendigo Stadium Dec 2011.
Gerald is growing up fast both physically and socially, he's got speed in his legs, good explosive power, a great leap, but a tiny bit unadjusted to his growing body. With time, training, discipline, further height added to his already large frame, and developing a thirst to win at all cost will see him go far in any sport of his choosing, a potential Australian representative I reckon if he continues to eat well, sleep enough hours, and be open to new knowledge. Gerald has a highly absorptive mind, he has confidence in crossing cultural barriers and to learn about the world around him, from both cultural and Western perspectives. He enjoys going to school and has a high attendance rate. When I stayed at Gapuwiyak and got given a room that became the single boys room at Emmanuel's mum's house, Gerald shared the room with me along with cheeky gotjuk. I couldn't believe my ears when Gerald asked me to wake him at 6.30 am. What? 6.30 am? Why so early? So he could get up, shower, and go to school and have breakfast before class started. I was impressed. And in the morning at 6.30 am when the alarm on my mobile went off, I gave Gerald a nudge to wake him then another. He rubbed his eyes, muttered a few words, then I pretty much drifted off to slumberland again - a consequence of travelling. But I made an attempt to open my eyes in what might have been a few minutes later and Gerald wasn't there. He'd gone to school. I awoke again much later when the sun indicated it was late morning and the heat of the day starting to scorch, luckily we had air-conditioning in our room. Gotjuk on the other hand continued in his blissful slumber, missing another day of school, naughty boy gotjuk!
Whoever Gerald's mentors, teachers and role models are, keep up the good work. He's a good brother-in-law with a strong attitude to life and has a bright future ahead of him, goodonya mit!
