The Manitowoc Containment Facility, located in Wisconsin and serving as a birdwatching area with over 300 species, faced challenges related to its Confined Disposal Facilities (CDFs). The material in these facilities made it difficult for heavy equipment to access the site for maintenance and dredging activities due to soft and weak soil conditions.
Presto Geosystems, in collaboration with the US Army Corps, provided a sustainable solution using their GEOWEB 3D Soil Stabilization System. This system was designed to withstand heavy loads, reduce maintenance, and offer cost-saving benefits.
The solution involved a 36,000 sq. ft. haul road designed over the weak soil using the GEOWEB® system. Given the site's sensitive environmental location, the low-impact GEOWEB® system also provided stormwater detention/retention benefits.
Post-installation, the GEOWEB® haul road has successfully managed heavy traffic, heavy rain events, and the operation of 70-ton haul trucks without any issues, proving to be an effective and efficient solution for the Manitowoc Containment Facility.
