Georgs Pelēcis - New Year’s Music (1979 / 1996)
Georgs Pelecis was born in Riga (Latvia) in 1947. He studied composition with Aram Khatchaturian at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Since 1970 he has been teaching polyphony at the Latvian Academy of Music. Recently he was appointed President of the Riga Centre of Early Music. Moreover he has a vast oeuvre to his credit as an important composer of this century.
Georgs Pelecis – one of the leading contemporary composers who writes new consonant music with an amazingly clear positive spirit and fresh harmonies. We can hear the reverberations of Renaissance and Baroque music in his compositions mixed with the minimalistic aesthetic.
Pelecis’s music is both naive and mysterious in style, and reveals his profound knowledge of the music of past cultures. As he himself says: “My musical language and my style of expression have been influenced by what I have learned and come to love in the music of the past; its melodies, its rhythms and its harmonies, which have evolved from the 14th Century to the present day through the German, Italian, English and French music of the 17th Century. The study of folklore has also deepened my understanding. I do not place great importance on the separation of “ancient” and “contemporary”. For me all great and irresistible music actually represents the glimmer of an ideal and conveys the psychological drama of the human spirit when confronted with this inaccessible ideal.”

Max Richter - Sub Piano (from Infra) Reworked
A few days ago I was posting shorts with a composition by Max Richter, and then I thought that short was too short. And so I recorded an extended version of Sub Piano. But I could not stop there and immediately recorded another melodic layer. And then another overdub, and another. And here is the result.
*Sub Piano is a bonus track from Infra - a studio album by neo-classical composer Max Richter, released on July 19, 2010, on FatCat Records. The album was reissued on April 25, 2014, on Deutsche Grammophon.
The concept for the Infra (Latin for ‘below’) is a comment on contemporary political issues with roots in the literary canon. Infra was written as a reaction to the 2005 ‘7/7’ subway bombings in London and was inspired by T.S. Eliot’s modernist poem, The Waste Land. It was originally composed for the highly acclaimed eponymous Royal Opera House ballet production, choreographed by Wayne McGregor and premiering in 2008. The piece reveals an emotive journey across oscillating individual and societal landscapes.

*“Ground in C Minor, ZD 221” is traditionally attributed to Henry Purcell, one of the most important composers of 17th-century England. Celebrated for his dramatic vocal works, sacred music, and refined keyboard writing, Purcell possessed a remarkable gift for combining structural clarity with harmonic boldness.
The piece reflects the Baroque fascination with variation over a repeating bass line (ground bass or ostinato) - a form Purcell mastered with striking emotional economy. Built upon a persistent descending pattern in C minor, the music unfolds through subtle harmonic shifts and increasingly ornate melodic figures, creating an atmosphere of gravity and inward tension.
However, the authorship of this work remains uncertain. While long associated with Purcell and catalogued as ZD 221, it has also been attributed to William Croft, appearing as part of his Suite No. 3. Such dual attribution reflects the fluid manuscript culture of the late 17th century, when stylistic proximity and the circulation of keyboard works often obscured clear authorship.
**Henry Purcell (c. 10 September 1659 – 21 November 1695) was an English composer and organist of the middle Baroque era. He was extremely prolific, having composed more than 100 songs, a tragic opera Dido and Aeneas, and wrote incidental music to a version of Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream called The Fairy Queen.
Purcells musical style was uniquely English, although it incorporated Italian and French elements. Purcell is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers.
