Loretta Carter Hanes (born in 1928 and 84 at time of this interview) recounts the memory of slavery passed down by her aunt, Etta Flossie Carter Weaver, who was once the private cook to Gen. John J. Pershing when he was at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Etta and Loretta trace their connection to an enslaved man called Suckey Bay, who labored at Washington's River Farm in the 1790s.
