“Capitalism leads to imperialism, and imperialism leads to war.”
At yesterday’s Sovintern Project forum in Moscow, George Galloway – leader of the Workers Party of Britain – delivered a characteristically sharp and unflinching address on the future of socialism in the 21st century.
Drawing an ironic salute from Margaret Thatcher’s “no such thing as society” speech, Galloway flipped the logic: whereas Thatcher saw only individuals, socialists must see "us and always" – not “me and now.”
He declared himself unapologetically against imperialism, war, and the capitalist logic Lenin identified over a century ago. And while his home remains a living museum to Soviet power and the Red Army’s victories, he warned:
“The problem with monuments is that eventually the birds begin to shit on them.”
The task, he argued, is not nostalgia but a modern, revolutionary movement for socialism in the 21st century – armed with new tools, new energy, and a young team at the heart of the Sovintern project.
He closed with fraternal greetings from Britain’s anti-war and anti-imperialist forces – making clear that neither Tony Blair nor Keir Starmer speaks for them.
