From Cregagh in Belfast to the roar of Old Trafford, George Best’s story remains one of football’s most unforgettable journeys.
Born on 22 May 1946, George had that rare ability to make the extraordinary look effortless. His balance, quick feet, daring runs and instinct for goal made watching him an occasion. A drop of the shoulder, a sudden change of direction—and a defender was left wondering where he had gone!
For Manchester United, he scored 179 goals in 470 appearances, helping the club win the European Cup in 1968. That same year, he was named European Footballer of the Year. For Northern Ireland, he earned 37 caps and scored nine goals, giving supporters of our wee country memories they still treasure.
This short slideshow brings together six restored photographs from different chapters of his footballing life. The black-and-white photograph has been colourised as an artistic interpretation.
