Steve Werling has been involved in the geotechnical engineering community for more than 36 years. Steve earned a Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and Registered Professional Geologist in multiple states and is also a LEED Accredited Professional through the Green Building Certification Institute. Steve has served in leadership roles on several professional boards, including the Indiana State Section ASCE Board of Directors, Transportation Technical Committee Chair for the ASCE Southeast Michigan Branch, and the Local Involvement Committee for the Geo‑Institute of ASCE.
Prior to joining Geopier, Steve spent over 15 years at Alt & Witzig Engineering, Inc., serving in a variety of roles including Project Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, Geotechnical Drilling Services Coordinator, and Geotechnical Engineer Group Leader. In these positions, he performed extensive subsurface evaluations for commercial, industrial, municipal, residential, and Indiana Department of Transportation projects. His recommendations encompassed shallow foundations, deep foundations, soil improvement, slope stability analyses, and pavement design.
He began his career at Geopier as a Regional Engineer serving Michigan and northern Ohio, where he conducted numerous site evaluations and developed cost‑effective recommendations for projects with poor soil conditions. As a Senior Regional Engineer, Steve had the opportunity to collaborate with Regional Engineers across the United States on sites with particularly challenging soil conditions. In his current role as Area Director for the South Region, Steve focuses on supporting Regional Engineers, Area Managers, engineering staff, and licensees to help deliver the best ground improvement solutions to Geopier’s partners in a timely manner.
