I've played this for two hours and already have a lot I like and a lot I dislike about it. I remember the DS version of Geometry Wars fondly, and this seems to be taking notes from that game, so that's fun. It's still a fairly tough twinstick shooter - being the modern model of the game for a while meant they had to really put their big-boy pants on, and that's still around (for better or worse 😅). The graphics are nicely realised - it might be a bit much for some, but I'm a fan of games that can manage to retain their visual identity through the addition of a third dimension.
However, as I say, I have some gripes. A restart is fairly short, but if you're aiming for a 3-star clear and you took a stupid death early on, that's going to feel a lot longer as time goes on. There's an insistence on using controller glyphs if the game detects one connected, even if you decide to use KB&M. After unlocking drones, you seemingly can't play without them (or the means to play without them is not made very clear). And weirdest of all: the game populates its "Friends" leaderboard with names pulled from your Steam Friends list, based seemingly on the nicknames you give those friends. But it doesn't specifically check if they HAVE the game - it just finds the name, finds some spod online who also played the game, and populates the list with total strangers, going "here's your friends! have fun!"
Stage 4 is an early one, but I can tell it's going to have me in some sort of vice grip given I'm already succumbing to the restart syndrome. This type of stage doesn't remove points or mult on dying, but DOES wipe the board on death, so potential points are swept away, leaving you scrabbling for points to get that 3-star before the timer's out. It's a good bit of fun!
