3.1 Genes: Gene sequencers

Understanding that:

- Gene sequencing is to determine the base sequence of genes
- New alleles are formed by mutation and gene sequencing allows that to be detected
- The Genbank database can be used to search for DNA base sequences. The cytochrome C gene sequence is available for many different organisms and is of particular interest because of its use in reclassifying organisms into three domains.
- Examples of gene sequencers include adding fluorescent markers, lasers, optical detectors to speed up the automation of the process where different colours are for the different bases. There is also gel electrophoresis (PCR), laser scans, optical detectors etc.
