Online abuse targeting marginalized groups has real-world consequences and can exacerbate existing inequalities in society. As the use of social media platforms continues to surge, the ambiguity of platform content moderation can often leave room for the promotion of hate speech and online violence.
This online event is moderated by CIGI Senior Fellow Suzie Dunn. She is joined by Florencia Goldsman, an expert in the areas of communication, gender and cyberculture. Goldsman is also the author of Non-binary TikTokers in Latin America: Sharing Debates and Circumventing Censorship. This event is part of CIGI’s research project Supporting a Safer Internet: Global Survey of Gender-Based Violence Online. Dunn and Goldsman discuss how women and LGBTQ+ groups have adopted strategies to protect themselves online and to shine a light on the flawed policies of social networks that require more accountability.
