Jeff Shaknaitis, GE Aviation senior engineer for customer technical programs, found his professional work and personal passion for climate change mix when United Airlines operated December 1, 2021, the aviation industry’s first passenger flight using 100% drop-in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The flight was powered by LEAP-1B engines produced by CFM International, a 50-50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines. All GE and CFM engines can operate on approved SAF.
