Feeding Bella the rescue gator for the first time in 4-5 months!! We’ve had a brutally cold winter and our crocodilians are unable to eat when it’s cold. They are ectothermic (cold blooded), which means their body temperature and metabolism depend on the surrounding environment. When temperatures drop, their metabolic rate slows dramatically, including digestion. The stomach relies on warmth to produce strong acids and digestive enzymes and to keep food moving through the gut. In cold conditions, digestion can become extremely slow or even stall, increasing the risk of food rotting in the stomach, fermentation, regurgitation, or bacterial overgrowth. Because of this, crocodilians instinctively reduce or stop feeding during cooler weather! A heathy gator can go an entire YEAR without eating in survival situations! These animals are absolutely incredible!! As you see, Big Mac is still not interested in in food, which is not that unusual given the weather.
This feeding was over a week ago when the weather was actually warm, but now it's cold again and was 25 this morning! Hopefully next week is warmer!
