I love this tape.
I have a very personal history with Gary Supply. They were one of my favorites in the 'egg punk' scene for a long while! I always loved their DIY, almost supergroup-esque ethos (being a band of four very different indie musicians all combining their styles) and even interviewed them for my Zine that I never did make a second issue of.
I found out about them in early 2018, when I was recommended an Anti upload of their 2017 tape Gary Goes To Hell. At the time, it was kind of this legendary single tape by this enigmatic band, especially because it had been over a year. A year was an insanely long time in the very fast paced scene back then. Anyways, I fell in love with the tape, so I went to the bandcamp link and was HORRIFIED to find the tape sold out! Aaaaah!
I emailed them like two or three times, and they finally got back to me saying they'd make more and had another album in the works. I'd like to think I played a part in the band waking up from their proverbial slumber. I got in the Gary Goes to Hell tape and waited anxiously for the forthcoming album. It finally released, and god it was incredible (this here tape). I pre-ordered a copy the day it released and got a copy kissed with pink lipstick on Side B. You also may notice the artwork is a misprint, missing "Hollow Bones" (Gotta was a sort-of hidden track).
So like, Gary Supply never made super great dubs of their tapes (well, they were actually way better than most Egg Punk tapes you'd buy at the time, tapes usually dubbed by kids who thought tapes were cool but never actually used them), but still, their dubs were kind of shitty. Gary has always been kinda lo fi, but the tapes even more so. I love it though. This cassette just sounds so warpy and melty, and it makes the deliciously-angsty "Die-Electric" sound even HEAVIER (although the cool keyboard solo in it is barely audible here. Alt mix? Who knows).
Gary Supply would go on to release one more tape, Agit-Pop which was kind of meh. Even at the time, all I could muster to comment on the bandcamp release was "Yay! More Gary!". It's not like, bad, but it's kind of forgettable and is even lower-fidelity, crossing the line of cool and just sounding kinda muddy. After that, the band went on hiatus due to the band's personal lives. They digitally released their rare demotape (in anyone has a copy, please get in touch) and then last year put out an anthology tape which went completely under my radar! I dunno, I guess I just miss these guys, and the egg scene as a whole. So it goes.
