Gaming has changed more in the last decade than many of us realize. What started as a simple story about losing my copy of 1080° Snowboarding on the Nintendo 64 turned into a much bigger realization about where the industry is headed. From physical cartridges and discs to digital libraries, subscriptions, live-service games, and cloud-based ecosystems, gaming is steadily moving from ownership to access. While digital gaming has made games more convenient and accessible than ever before, it has also raised important questions about preservation, permanence, and what it truly means to own a game. As physical media continues to disappear and the lines between consoles, PCs, and digital platforms become increasingly blurred, are we gaining more than we’re giving up?
