Requested by my good friend Anthony.
Yars Revenge is a video game designed by Howard Scott Warshaw for the Atari Video Computer System (Atari VCS). [a] The game involves a fly-like humanoid alien race known as Yars attacking their arch-rivals the Qotile who have destroyed their habitable planets in their solar system. The players control a Yar and fire or devour an energy shield protecting the Qotile to finish off the enemy with their Zorlon cannon.
Yars Revenge was the first video game developed by Warshaw. Initially tasked with developing a port of the arcade game Star Castle (1980) by Cinematronics, he developed it at first focusing on graphics and taking in feedback from co-workers to develop its gameplay. Warshaw was also responsible for the backstory of the game, which was later developed into a comic book that was included with the games release in May 1982. It became the highest-grossing original game developed for the system.
The game received positive retrospective reviews from publications such as Flux and AllGame and Retro Gamer. The game has since been re-released on various Atari-themed video game compilations. The game received follow-ups and remakes, including Yars Revenge (2011), Yars: Recharged (2022) and Yars Rising (2024).
