In this excerpt from Gabrielle Daniels’ lecture at Duke Divinity School, “Medical Racism: A Matter of Public Health and Christian Social Ethics,” Daniels discusses how tennis champion Serena Williams' birth experience became life threatening after her medical team refused to listen to her concerns. The lecture was given at the Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative's Practice and Presence Conference in September 2018. Daniels is a Project Manager at the Equal Justice Initiative and has her own practice as a birth and postpartum doula in Montgomery, Alabama, called, Your Doula Cares. She holds an MPH from Yale, and an MACS from Duke Divinity school.
